Digital Shadow

I have really enjoyed last week and this weeks study work. Learning about our internet footprint (what we put up about ourselves on the net) and our digital shadow (what we may not know is on the net about ourselves) has been really interesting.  I have been quite relieved to find out that there is nothing on the internet about me that I didn't already know about.

I'm still not that keen on putting up on the net too much information about myself, so I have decided with the theme of 'a few of my favourite things' for my web presence assignment. I have chosen a few random sites and objects that I like and am going to design a background image etc to keep the theme going through my website, twitter account etc.

Unfortunately although I have put a bit of thought into my assignment, at this stage I haven't put a lot of action into it. So with that in mind I bid you adieu.

Busy, busy, busy ...

Gosh - It's been a while since I blogged. In that time I have completed my Web101 assignment 2, hoping to get a better grade than assignment 1. I have actually put in quite a bit of work so am desperately hoping I'm not disappointed. Even handed it in the day before it was due, but that's more because I really want to make sure I hit all my due dates.

I have only just started looking at my Internet Footprint so will have to get two weeks of course work done this week along with starting Assignment 3. I have worked out what I'm doing and how I'm going to do it, so it is mainly just gathering information and putting it all together.

I have also just finished house renovations with a new kitchen, bathroom, toilet, hot water system, heating system, carpet and lino. A busy couple of weeks. A hard couple of weeks. Especially with the carpet. It sounds cool - 'Oooh lets get new carpet, it will make the house look sooo much better'. Then the logistics hit. Having to basically pack up your house and move it all around is no mean feat. Mind you the house has never been cleaner or as clutter free. A silver lining I suppose.

Anyway this week will all be about catching up and getting a move on, so I had better get to it!

Wikis

On to this weeks work - Wikis.

I haven't had much experience with Wikis, never having been a part of a collaboration project via wikis before so was quite interested in the theory behind the 'collaboration of the masses'.

I have used Wikipedia before and my kids use it for school also, but we have used is as Jimmy Wales suggests - a place to start not to finish.

With this weeks activity I chose to edit a page on Cake Decorating as I have been heavily involved in cake decorating in the past and do know my stuff. The Wikipage mentions that fondant icing comes in many colours which is actually incorrect as it actually comes in three styles one of which you add food colouring to in order to achieve the correct colour. I changed the Wikipedia article but on reviewing the alteration three days later it had been changed back, even though it is again incorrect.

Looking at the history it was not the original editor who made the changes but an administrator for Wikipedia. I did make the changes anonymously and wonder if I had set up an account would the changes have been accepted?

It does make you think about the accuracy of information even after hearing Tama's lecture and that Wikipedia has around the same number of mistakes as Encyclopedia Britannica.

Blogging

After having a go at RSS feeds I actually feel a lot better with blogging. I am a total skeptic regarding blogs but I think that's more to do with the fact that I don't have a lot to say rather than being against blogs in general. I know a number of my colleagues use RSS feeds to keep up to date in their field of work etc. I think I will do some digging and find some feeds that are appropriate for my work and see how I go.

I noticed on the discussion boards that people were saying they don't know how they will keep up with their RSS feeds along with their Twitter, Facebook etc. I was once told that these Web 2.0 tools are akin to meeting with friends in the staffroom at 10am everyday. If you are able to be there you hear all the latest gossip and goings on, but do you miss it if you can't make it? Treat your Twitter, RSS Feed etc the same way, you don't need to read or comment on everything. If you miss a few days it won't matter.

I really liked the idea of 'citizen journalism' and keeping the media honest, I think we could do with more of that. Cheers for now.

Web 2.0

Well ... it's been a busy week. My kitchen renovation is nearly finished, stone benchtops on, new lighting done, just waiting on the glass splashback and then I can tick one off my list.

Bathroom gets started on Monday, more builders, more noise and more mess. Oh well the sooner the better I guess.

Surgery on my ankle went well, not as major as first thought. Could have had a bone graft from my hip and then in a cast but they only took out the broken bone and put in screws and things to reattach ligaments. I will set off airport metal detectors now - lol. Recovering well although the pain killers made me sick (did not enjoy that). Another week at home then hopefully back to work.

With my time off I have had lots of time to get into the first assignment and as I usually leave everything to the last minute, I am actually proud to say that I have finished with three days to go. I haven't uploaded it yet as I will revise it again tomorrow and then upload.

On to Web 2.0. Funnily enough I actually feel like I have grown with the changes that have come from Web 2.0. Its only been in the last 4 -5 years that I have actually been interested in the internet so I feel that Web 2.0 is the way it should be. I guess I don't have any baggage from Web 1.0 that I am carrying around.

I really enjoyed the video of technology writer Clay Shirky, so much so that I think I will see if he has a blog and subscribe. I had a look at everyone's delicious bookmarks and have been impressed with the wide range, even bookmarked some myself.

Roll on next week - hopefully with less pain!!

World Wide Web

This week we are covering the World Wide Web, it's history and it's functionality.

I am quite interested in the post structural theorists and their thoughts on reading online. It's quite a good pondering point. Checking out the examples we were given was a bit odd, narrative really doesn't work but the young boy's page about his life I thought worked well. I think narrative doesn't work as you need to read from start to finish with the story plotted out as the author intended, information sourcing though is a different story. When you search for information you just read what you want and search for more, it doesn't need to be read from start to finish and that is true for printed material not only online. For example you don't read a cookbook from start to finish, you just look up the pages you want to read.

I also was very impressed with Tim Berners-Lee' vision and forethought in keeping his protocols free for everyone to share and use. If he hadn't the massive amount of information transfer and sharing we enjoy today just wouldn't be possible.

Going into hospital for surgery on my foot today, so looking forward to next week and finishing my assignment to give me something to do.

What is the internet?

I have actually found this topic interesting, although if I'm honest I don't quite get how it all fits together as such yet. I'm hoping after next weeks 'What is the World Wide Web', I will be able to distinguish between the two a little better.

Who knew the internet had been around for 40 plus years, and after listening to Tama's lecture, what amazing foresight the founders of the internet had. The video of packet switching and the activities this week were also very informative.

I am sure the founders of the internet in their time were thought of as 'radical' and even laughed at - who is laughing now. It makes me think that perhaps we should be listening a little more carefully to those in today's world we label as 'radical' or 'before their time'. A quick search on google turns up more than enough future technology, maybe in the not too distant future the items in Mary Bellis' Top Ten Inventions Needed will be a reality.

All in all so far so good and with my ankle operation coming up I had better start looking towards getting my first assignment underway. I really need to have a good look at the APA referencing to make sure I get that right.

Cheers for now.
