Web 2.0

Well ... it's been a busy week. My kitchen renovation is nearly finished, stone benchtops on, new lighting done, just waiting on the glass splashback and then I can tick one off my list.

Bathroom gets started on Monday, more builders, more noise and more mess. Oh well the sooner the better I guess.

Surgery on my ankle went well, not as major as first thought. Could have had a bone graft from my hip and then in a cast but they only took out the broken bone and put in screws and things to reattach ligaments. I will set off airport metal detectors now - lol. Recovering well although the pain killers made me sick (did not enjoy that). Another week at home then hopefully back to work.

With my time off I have had lots of time to get into the first assignment and as I usually leave everything to the last minute, I am actually proud to say that I have finished with three days to go. I haven't uploaded it yet as I will revise it again tomorrow and then upload.

On to Web 2.0. Funnily enough I actually feel like I have grown with the changes that have come from Web 2.0. Its only been in the last 4 -5 years that I have actually been interested in the internet so I feel that Web 2.0 is the way it should be. I guess I don't have any baggage from Web 1.0 that I am carrying around.

I really enjoyed the video of technology writer Clay Shirky, so much so that I think I will see if he has a blog and subscribe. I had a look at everyone's delicious bookmarks and have been impressed with the wide range, even bookmarked some myself.

Roll on next week - hopefully with less pain!!

World Wide Web

This week we are covering the World Wide Web, it's history and it's functionality.

I am quite interested in the post structural theorists and their thoughts on reading online. It's quite a good pondering point. Checking out the examples we were given was a bit odd, narrative really doesn't work but the young boy's page about his life I thought worked well. I think narrative doesn't work as you need to read from start to finish with the story plotted out as the author intended, information sourcing though is a different story. When you search for information you just read what you want and search for more, it doesn't need to be read from start to finish and that is true for printed material not only online. For example you don't read a cookbook from start to finish, you just look up the pages you want to read.

I also was very impressed with Tim Berners-Lee' vision and forethought in keeping his protocols free for everyone to share and use. If he hadn't the massive amount of information transfer and sharing we enjoy today just wouldn't be possible.

Going into hospital for surgery on my foot today, so looking forward to next week and finishing my assignment to give me something to do.

What is the internet?

I have actually found this topic interesting, although if I'm honest I don't quite get how it all fits together as such yet. I'm hoping after next weeks 'What is the World Wide Web', I will be able to distinguish between the two a little better.

Who knew the internet had been around for 40 plus years, and after listening to Tama's lecture, what amazing foresight the founders of the internet had. The video of packet switching and the activities this week were also very informative.

I am sure the founders of the internet in their time were thought of as 'radical' and even laughed at - who is laughing now. It makes me think that perhaps we should be listening a little more carefully to those in today's world we label as 'radical' or 'before their time'. A quick search on google turns up more than enough future technology, maybe in the not too distant future the items in Mary Bellis' Top Ten Inventions Needed will be a reality.

All in all so far so good and with my ankle operation coming up I had better start looking towards getting my first assignment underway. I really need to have a good look at the APA referencing to make sure I get that right.

Cheers for now.

The Beginning

Well here it goes ...

I have never been interested in blogging, tweeting or any other form of online communication. I guess I'm old school, I like to look people in the eye and read their body language as we talk to one another. I know a lot of my friends aren't interested in Facebook, Twitter or blogs so who am I going to talk to?

But as part of my first online paper (WEB101) with Curtin University I must connect and collaborate with my fellow students and so I have to get over myself and start putting down on paper - ooops not quite right - putting out into cyberspace my thoughts and opinions.

Well actually I should stop complaining right here as there is a purpose to this blog as I am going to use it as my learning portfolio.

"You will also participate in various learning conversations, either on the discussion boards, using online tools, or (for on-campus students) in face-to-face tutorials or labs.  In order to summarise, analyse and critically reflect on your learning throughout the unit, each week you are asked to create a portfolio entry in which narrates your critical thinking on either a task or conversation from that week."

It's my decision whether I share this blog with anybody or not but you never know what I encounter during the course of my studies may be helpful to others so I'm happy to share.
